EMPLOYMENT PROCESS

Understanding the Employment Process
(Please click above for further information)

Examination. The exam process includes meeting eligible requirements and passing a test, if applicable. Regardless of your examination results, you may not retest for the same classification for six (6) months. If you do retest after six months, the second score, better or worse counts.

Special Testing Accommodations. If you feel that you need special testing arrangements due to a disability, please request and complete the "Special Testing Accommodations Request Form" as soon as possible prior to the examination date.

Eligible Lists. A list of qualified candidates will be established in descending order of scores obtained during the examination process. Referrals to vacant positions will be made with those achieving higher scores referred first over those with lower scores. Candidates' names will remain o eligible lists for twelve months, unless otherwise indicated at the time of application filing.

Background Investigations. The background investigation process includes a thorough check of any and all criminal and civil actions, inquiries into military, educational, and employment histories, and personal and professional reference checks. Applicants will be evaluated on fifteen job dimensions as set by the Commission of Peace Officers Standards and Training. These job dimensions include, but are not limited to, such areas as communication skills, dependability, judgment and integrity. The applicant must submit a comprehensive biographical package to include a financial breakdown, driving record, use of illicit drugs and intoxicants, etc. (Refer also to Background Process)

Medical Examination. Job offers made are contingent upon passing a medical examination which may include a drug test and/or a psychological evaluation. Failure to meet medical standards may result in withdrawal of appointment or termination if employed prior to completion of medical examination.

Immigration Law. At the time of hire, County employees must meet the documentation requirements of the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986.

Probationary Period. All regular County employees must satisfactorily complete a probationary period of six to twelve months. Upon promotion, employees must complete a new probationary period.

Veteran's Preference. Applicants who serve in a time of war and have a service-connected disability of at least 10%, may claim veteran's preference in all open examinations. Evidence of disability (VA letter indicating percentage of disability and a legible copy of Form DD214) must be filed with the application. Current County employees may not claim veterans' preference.

Travel. Some jobs require travel throughout the county. Employees selected for such positions will be required to provide their own transportation and proof of insurance.
