Academy

The Sheriff's Regional Training Center is certified by P.O.S.T. and accredited by San Bernardino Valley College. Each graduate earns 39.75 college units. The training center delivers an intensive 23 weeks of instruction that exceeds the standard required by the State of California. In fact, our Basic Academy is consistently rated among the top Basic Academy presenters in the state. In 1996 the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department Regional Training Center received the Governors Award for our commitment to training excellence. Since the inception, the Academy has trained over 75 different agencies.

The Basic Academy delivers 920 hours of instruction, which consists of 42 Learning Domains, for example; Introduction to Law, Crime scene investigation and tactical communication. There are 26 POST-Mandated tests on the subjects taught at the academy. Additionally, there are 20 practical exercise scenarios, which are conducted at our mock city. Due to the Basic Academy's vast resources, all instruction takes place on site. These activities occur at our 12 range facilities, 2 Firearm Training Simulators, 2 Realistic Assault Confrontation Houses, a Chemical Agent House, a multi-purpose gymnasium, and a emergency vehicle operation facility. The physical fitness program consist of 40 two-hour sessions, which include weight training, mat/stretching exercises, and aerobic/formation runs on both dirt and paved surfaces.

The Basic Academy offers a variety of classes for student family members. Programs include: Spousal Orientation- Overview of Academy philosophy, Joint Spousal Orientation -Assistance for relationships in the law enforcement profession, Range Day-Firearm use and safety, Assault Prevention Class-Spousal awareness, and Emergency Vehicle Operation Center-Driver awareness instruction.

The Basic Academy is proud of our community participation such as blood drives, community runs, and charity projects.

The Basic Academy has a structured environment in order to help students reach their full potential when dealing with stressful situations.
